Diary #2 - Setting the Scene

23 November 2023

After a very busy and tiring week, it's time for me to turn to my Food Soccer game!

In this entry, I will discuss how we imported all our assets into Unity, and got into making our 4v4 venue that will be used. I contemplated what sort of venue we'd have for our matches. My initial thought was to have an actual football stadium, but then my mind into going with a setting that matched our theme, so I began thinking about having our matches held in a kitchen or dining table. I ended up going with the latter.

The reason why I made this decision, is mainly to do with the textures and resources available on the web. It's A LOT harder and time consuming if I searched for assets to use in a kitchen (tiles, metals) not to forget the extra modelling that needs to be done, whereas a dining table doesn't need much going on, other than a table, four walls, a ceiling, and a floor. I used www.opengameart.org for textures, and began working on the setting, as well as the lighting in Unity.

Obviously there isn't much going on, but doesn't need much either. I've also realized that anyone playing as the Tea team would have a physical size advantage, but that shouldn't affect anything so much.

I have also written up some banners that would cover up the walls. Some of these are excessively cheesy but I tried my best.

My next steps are now to figure out the networking. I felt as though it would be necessary to get the multiplayer stuff sorted out, and figuring out how to connect users to each other and get messages/events through before working on controls and the actual gameplay. I also need to add the liquid to the tea's clay cups, as well as adding the banners to the scene.
